4.5⭐️
2.5/5 🌶

Definitely was not expecting much from this novella, but so glad I read it! I loved the enemies ➡️ friends ➡️ lovers in this, and how we gradually get to see this relationship grow (I hate insta-love!).

Plot was exciting and very well written. I wasn't too shocked about the twists, but still ended up pleasantly surprised at the end. FMC has great growth here (we ❤️ a strong female) with her journey being not only physical but also struggles mentally. MMC was everything you want in a broody, grumpy sunshine.

Overall, happy about this choice. Onto the next!

This book had a very slow hook to it: it was hard for me to be interested enough to keep reading. Seems like I previously paused my reading just before things got interesting, though, since now I enjoyed the book well enough. 😅

I much prefer this Broadbent's standalone novel to her fantasy series, where I've enjoyed the first book just to be agonized to find the characters
in an even more perilous
situation in the prequel. I don't thrive in reading about constant suffering, and even though this book had plenty of that, there were enough lighter moments to balance them out. With this standalone, I can be happy that these characters have had their adventure (
even though they are promised to have an appearance in the Crowns of Nyaxia series
) and I'm content with how things turned out for them.

Previous DNF review:

I consider this book paused: I'll continue it some day (I bought it, so might as well), but seems that day isn't near yet. It has already been sitting unopened a couple of months since I first picked it up, so it can wait more. Maybe I'll be in the mood for this later.

I just love silly little vampire romance books. They bring me so much joy! Carissa Broadbent is so good at writing these stories, and I was so satisfied with this standalone book. I appreciated the slow burn and the unfolding of Sylina's understanding of her past and current role, and the way Atrius as a character was unpacked was lovely. Chemistry was sizzling, plot was easy to follow, and I loved our spunky Sylina. All in all, a great read!

 I didn’t miss sight anymore...

- Slaying the Vampire Conqueror, p. 1

This review is quite difficult for me, because I loved the other three books from the Crowns of Nyaxia world we have so far.

But I absolutely didn't love this. The only reason why I finished it, was because the characters will be playing a role in the upcoming CoN books.

I was just so bored and I didn't care about the characters at all. Everything they did, felt like they had to work through an errand list, I was so annoyed after a while.

Sylina and Atrius have no chemistry in my opinion and it makes no sense that she fell for him (the story is from her pov).
Pretty much everything is so foreseeable and even the plot twist towards the end didn't really shock me (not to say I expected that THAT would happen, I just didn't care for it).

Besides that, there were some plot elements, that didn't make sense, like how did Atrius even make it this far, without Sylina, she pretty much told him how to do the conquering from the moment they meet...

However, I hope that CoN3 will be much better and more like the other main books. It would be a shame if this series got worse with every book.
