A brilliant book with exceptional narration.
I had seen the movie before going into this, and was pleasantly surprised to find that they don’t differ much from one another, but of course the book gives a much deeper insight into the emotion that Cardinal Lomeli faces throughout the conclave.
This book leans on choices, relating to both a small group of relatively alike individuals, and the impact that those choices and beliefs have on the world as a whole.
It explores what it means to be united in progress and how, should you believe, God’s will and the interpretation of that will challenges us.
Written in 2016, but still relevant today, if not even more so, it was an illuminating look into the view and traditions of Catholicism, the Papacy, and the future of the Church.
Again, our narrator Roy McMillan goes above and beyond to capture each character’s unique voice and point of view, leading me to believe that his performance had undoubtedly impacted the casting of the 2024 film adaptation.
Give this book a read, you won’t be disappointed.

Two thoughts:
1. A little too many plottwists in my opinion, still a good and intriguing book tho
2. Even the men of God are just ordinary men in the end
3. Benítez♡honestly need him as a Pope at times like this
4. Kinda wanna be a cardinal but just for the style

This was a great book! I saw the movie first, which I enjoyed but the book was better. I liked the insight into the main character as well as the behind the scenes insight into the conclave. The Pope in the book appears to have been modeled after the current Pope Francis. This made for an intriguing glimpse into what the next Conclave might encounter in terms of progressive vs conservative tensions. Very well written and hard to put down!
