It's ok. I didn't learn much, but I've also studied, so maybe the book wasn't meant for me. The writers need to coordinate as there are multiple overlaps which I found annoying. Others might find this adds more connections, but it didn't for me. This includes the listening "homework." I liked this idea but had I known how much is have to seek out, how long they were, or how often they repeated, I'd have passed entirely. It also baffled me how most of the samples are not in the standard listening. Those who've studied music are familiar with the Norton recordings. Only a couple of the hundred-ish listening pieces were in the Norton or my personal collection. I'm not against hearing new things (except Schoenberg, I've learned) but to have do few standards is strange, especially if this book is meant for someone who's interested but lacks that base. TWO of huge pieces were unfindable...unless I had planned months ahead and scoured old record stores, which is unreasonable given the book's premise.
