I appear to be in the minority here but…Convicts get to be firefighters instead of prisoners. They learn about fire. This allows them to do their time and then commit arson which then allows them to pull of a heist. There were times that I was reading and completely tuned out. Somehow I finished it.

This was a top notch thriller that I couldn't put down and all the main characters were some of the best.

Fun vacation read, though possibly a thinly veiled commercial for KFC.

Malibu Burning (Sharpe & Walker #1)
By Lee Goldberg, narrated by Eric Conger

Danny Cole is an extremely successful conman/thief and he's good to his team, which means they are always there for him, even if he has to spend years in prison. Danny also has a soft spot for those in need and if anything is going to trip him up it's that he'll put helping someone who needs help first even if it means a sure prison sentence. The book starts several years in the past with one of Danny's well planned cons that gets tripped up by Danny's savior instinct getting him caught.

US marshal, Andrew Walker, is the man who caught Danny. But now, years later, he has a wife and a kid on the way and to keep his wife from leaving him he's quit his former job to take a safer job as an arson investigator. His new partner and mentor is Walter Sharpe, a man who loves his job and who has the face of that wrinkly skinned dog with a name similar to Sharpe's name. His dog nickname gets used a lot and for the seriousness of the arson crimes, the silly humor in this story carried the day for me.

Andrew and Walter go at each other like they will be glad when each day is over and they can get away from the other but, really, they make a good team. Opposites in so many ways, Walter is the serious one who loves playing with all his arson gadgets. He's good at his job, he can think like an arson, and even though you might not think so at first meeting, he is a rule bender to get the job done. Danny is a rule bender, too, and he's a guy who will go after his man until he's caught. The rule bender part is the bonding part of the partnership for this duo, their rule bending is to catch the bad guy when rules and bureaucracy gets in the way of getting the job done.

I enjoyed the story a lot as we follow Danny's convict fire fighting years where he comes up with the idea for his next con once he's out of prison. It's a clever one although, no matter how much Danny is built up as a "good" bad guy, I can never forget all the people his crime endangers, all the animals his crime kills, and all the lives he's destroying by his crime. I'm here for the repartee between Andrew and Walter, they make me laugh, whether it's almost under his breath asides that Andrew knows Walter can hear or the outright making fun of each other. I look forward to the next book in this series just so I can hang out with these two.
