Jacqueline Woodson has a poetic way of writing-the imagery and sentence structure is beautiful. It's a short book, but it encompasses so much about growing up and coming to terms with your history, and I'd really recommend it on audio.

Dark and thoughtful look at the adolescence of a group of girls and the struggles they encountered.
This was well done, although it left me with some unanswered questions. I wanted to know more about the character in present day, but the book was about the memory of her adolescence, so I guess I shouldn't complain.
A short but intense read. The lyrical prose was lovely in the audiobook version. This was read for my book club and was a great read for discussion.
I highly recommend reading this with other people -- you will want to talk about it afterwards. My book club read it and had one of the most meaningful discussions since the group was started. We are from different backgrounds, and each of us connected with this deceptively simple-seeming, rich book in a range of ways. Sometimes, we all found a particular part of the book connected with most if not all of us, but for a variety of reasons.
Woodson's writing is rich and powerful, with not one extraneous word. I read along and a good pace, and then would occasionally be stopped by a sentence and think, "Wow. That was perfect."

all over the place
I wanted to like this book, but it just didn’t do it for me. It was hard to keep up with what was going on.

That place between pain and memory, friendship and love.
A dream that feels like you are on mushrooms, devouring the Brooklyn sun, dusty and hot.
