3.5/5!! man i love penny character sooo much she’s so funny (( i mean there’s alot of time i can relate to whatever she said )) HAHAHAHA
This book was so full of personality. I love the unique characters and each of their flaws. The idea of internet connection progressing to real life seemed cliche, but I think this novel did an amazing job of conveying the message.
So cute.
So cute.

so i finally read Emergency Contact by @
i’d been meaning to read this book since before it came out, i remember when it first got announced i read the blurb and was so excited as it sounded like something i would love and the cover is gorgeous !!!!!!
unfortunately the last few years my reading hasn’t
been as voracious as it once was so i just never got around to reading it until i saw it at my local library! obviously after wanting to read it for 2+ years i had to borrow it and was so excited to read it but of course, being myself, i procrastinated and didn’t read it until a couple days before it had to be returned (っ・ω・)っ
regardless of how long it took me to get to this book, i am so incredibly glad i read it.
this book was amazing, i was hooked as soon as i started. i read the first 14 or so pages one night before bed and then the rest of it in one sitting a few days later.
this book was literally perfect in my eyes.
it acknowledged so many important topics and dealt with them all appropriately, it made me think about things in ways i hadn’t before, it helped me escape my anxieties and had me unable to put it down. it had everything i could have wanted and things i didn’t realise i needed.
i smiled almost the entire time and laughed so many times that my cheeks hurt !!!
it was so heartwarming and full of warmth and love and wholesomeness, it was wonderful.
i am just so unbelievably delighted i was able to read it and i can’t wait to read more from this author!!! i have already placed permanent record on hold at my library and i’m eagerly anticipating Mary’s new book Yolk !!! please please read this if you get the chance, you won’t regret it ♡

I don't read too many contemporary books but I loved the style of this one. Reading in texts for part of the book was refreshing and felt like I was intimately getting to know the characters. I laughed and I cried and would recommend this to anyone looking for a palette cleanser if they are stuck in reading one genre!

Some spoilers ahead, they can be triggering so I think they’re import to mention.
For starters, if you’re a particularly sensitive person, I extra wouldn’t suggest this book. Not only is it one of the most cynical and depressing books I’ve ever read/listened to it also goes into detail about sexual assault.
Okay time to complain
The main character (Penny) was so judgemental about everyone around her especially other women and then decides she’s the most feminist person in the planet, describing why words like baby used affectionately is sexist and wrong— then she judges and criticizes every single woman she sees and meets for doing anything particularly feminine or different to her.
The love interest, (Sam) isn’t much better. Honestly the only redeeming quality was that his reader in the audiobook had a very nice voice to listen to. Both of them just had such a dark view of the world and had a ‘my trauma is worse than your trauma’ attitude about their experiences in life.
What was fascinating, was literally being in both Penny and Sam’s head and not understanding how or when the crush turned from a puppy crush to something more. I get it from a basic standpoint? But the romance just wasn’t really there? At least for me.
I did like some things, there were good messages (some about pushing people away that were really nice and impactful) and lines that made me laugh and fun comic references, just overall I didn’t really have fun with it as I’d hoped.
I think this book just wasn’t for me, but I’m so glad that those that love it, are happy and enjoying it. ♡ I hope you have a nice day!

“Finally, if you’re wondering if it counts and it feels like it counts, it counts”
I absolutely obliterated this book and I’ve surprised myself because I really didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did. I’ve seen the reviews I’ve heard other’s opinions, but here is a review from someone who usually doesn’t enjoy YA contemporary romances.
Witty and relatable. I found myself unable to put this one down. The pace of the book was great as it focused on the relationship between Sam and Penny, not diverting too far off when other characters were in the mix. We always came back to the two just at the right time.
I felt the giddy excitement while reading their conversations, the same feeling one gets when they have a crush. Sam’s nonchalant optimism is refreshing despite the unfortunate circumstances he has faced throughout his life. Penny is every moody girl. While she technically doesn’t really care, she still cares. I can totally relate to her rage and crying when I’m either angry or hungry.
I found Mary H. K. Choi’s writing mature and I appreciated the intellectual references throughout the book.
