What an adorable book! We read it out loud as a family and loved it! It's a poetry book with fabulous illustrations all about the United States Presidents, from Washington ending with Obama. Each page gave a rather brief history of the president and what he was most known for.

Good information, but the poetry is often awkward. I loved the illustrations.

Assessment of Quality: Not only are the poems about all of the U.S. presidents up to Obama are inventive and informative, but the illustrations on each page are bold and interesting as well.
Assessment of potential use: this would be a fun book to include in a U.S. history curriculum as a tool to help learn about or memorize the presidents.
Assessment of appeal to children: The styles of the poems for each president vary greatly, some are even rhyming dialogues, which help keep children engaged.

A book that I wish I had had when studying for my US history AP exam. Amusing and important information about our former Commanders-in-Cheif conveyed in poems, quotes, and captivating illustrations. I especially liked that some of the poems were conversations between multiple presidents!

I would recommend this for a middle or high school classroom, as the writing and content is on a somewhat advanced level.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this book. While I can see using it in the classroom, the poems didn't all work especially well for me. I do love the multi-voice poetry since it is something I use while teaching perspectives in history. The illustrations are lovely and add necessary zest to the subject matter. Some of the poetry seems a little slanted, but I also appreciate that Singer doesn't shy away from any truths about our past leaders. It's not a book I see many 3-5th graders perusing just for the heck of it, but I think it does have a place on many bookshelves.
See? I am totally love-hate ambiguous about this book. I gave it 4 stars because the parts I love, I really love, and I see this book adding some great texture to classroom conversations.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy reading this book as much as I did. There are a clear rhythm and rhyme to all of the poems and it makes reading about the presidents enjoyable. Each page also has a fun illustration of the president that were fun to look at. Lastly, at the end of the book the author provides a short paragraph about each president which added to the educational value of the book.

Apparently I'm in the minority here looking at other reviews. Hendrix's illustrations are Fabulous!!! But this is not Singer's best work. The whole thing felt forced. On an editorial note I wouldn't have included each President's political party at the top of each poem with President name and years in office. The 11 pages of short biographies in the back matter are far more interesting than the poems, which gave me a headache about five minutes in.

Delightful poems packed with information (and additional information at the end), "cartoon" like illustrations add to the overall fun feeling.
