An unsettling look into one of the darkest moments of human history, the Zone of Interest does a great job in maintaining a macabre unease throughout but ultimately it suffers from a lack of coherent plot despite the well written and researched historical setting and story.

A hard read, both in content and the way the story was told. There is a lot of German used and sometimes it made me feel left out of the story. The main characters have few redeeming qualities.

« Although I live in the present, and do so with a pathological fixity, I remember everything that has happened to me since I came to the Lager. Everything. To remember an hour would take an hour. To remember a month would take a month.

I cannot forget because I cannot forget. »

Amis is once again able to bring the subject of the Second World War to the novel and make it interesting, thought-provoking, and loaded with gravitas.

pales in comparison to the astonishing movie. the strongest parts of the novel are the sonderkommando sections which feel motivated less by a desire to shock.
