I read this for a book club, and if not for that I don’t know if I would have finished. The first 40% or so is gut-wrenching tragic, and it’s not really clear where things are going except that it feels like it will somehow get unthinkably worse. Just before the halfway point, the narrative switches to a pursuit of lost family history and weaving together more of the author’s past. Ultimately I think there are some interesting themes of family history, inherited trauma/traits, namesakes, along with establishing the danger of government propaganda and “othering” people based on a few loud people’s preferences (feels especially pertinent in the current political climate). The first section is just so hard to get through emotionally that it would drive some readers away.

Led to a fruitful book club discussion.

Thoroughly enjoyed this traverse through family history, such sadness amazingly described and how the history of your ancestors and their struggles can become your own baggage and shape your own being. Would give 4.5 stars
