Overall really enjoyed this book. Thought it was an insightful look into WWII France that I haven’t heard much about before. The translation was effective as well. However, I felt there was almost too much going on with the plot. A lot of threads were open and not followed back on. And sometimes it read more of a historical accounts not than the modern take it seemed to go for. And the prose was kinda lackluster

Iga sellist päriselul põhinevat ühe perekonna traagilist lugu on väga raske loo keskselt hinnata. Jah, küllap esineb siingi ilukirjanduslikke võtteid ning suur osa detailidest laagrites ei pruugi olla täpsed, siis sellegipoolest leidub siin rohkelt tõde ning nagu autor välja toob, põhineb valdavalt tema ema tehtud uurimistööl nende andmete põhjal, mida on õnnestunud eri ametitest kätte saada, või teiste inimeste mälestuste kaudu taastada. Teostuselt on raamat suurepärane - seatakse selge ajajoon, tegelased on värvikad, lugu ei vasta ainult “hea ja halva” standarditele, joonealuseid märkuseid on piisavalt, mitte üleliia, seega endiselt jääb lugejale võimalus täiendavat infot internetist leida. Valus, kuid vajalik lugu.

Teetering between memoir and historical fiction, this book is beautifully written. I was transported to a place so similar to what we are experiencing now with its subtle undertones of hatred. Anne lovingly pieces together the story of her late grandmother with application to her own life and emotions. What does it mean to be Jewish? What does it mean to be a survivor? What does it mean to feel silent threats but not understand them or your history. Epigenetics is briefly touched on. The whole work of art is fascinating, heartwarming and heartbreaking. Thank you, Anne, for sharing your family with the world.
