Scarlett O'Hara is a selfish manipulative bitch. This book is over 1000 pages of her whining over some man who married his cousin at the beginning of the book only to decide in the last 20 pages she never really loved him – I want to strangle Scarlett O'Hara and I want my time back
Because even the 7th time around, this book is the best.
Wow. Just wow. The movie was way off base with this book. I have all these emotions that I am unsure how to put into words. I get Scarlett. What she feels makes sense to me and I feel bad for her but at the same time want to smack her outside the head. Ashley is a dream man and I love him dearly and Melanie is the best friend a girl could ask for. The only tears I shed were for the Tarleton twins who reminded me of Fred and George Weasley. This is definitely high on my favorite book list. I learned a lot about myself and the world around me because of this book. Everyone should read this at some point in their life even if it does take a month to read.

There's nothing I can say that can adequately sum up how I feel about this book. I read it over 5 years ago, and I still think of it often. What a splendid reading experience. Truly a survival story at its core. -5 Sept 2023

I have no idea how I finished this. This was a very heavy and depressing book(especially since there was so much racism). I think I need sometime to collect my thoughts on this. I also used the audiobook to finish this quicker, and the voice the narrator did put me out of the story(the female voices).
The “black” dialogues were just not understandable to me.
I also realised that I need to educate myself on the American Civil War and Slavery. But since, I am not as knowledgeable on these topics. I will refrain on speaking on this whilst also recognising that this book was racist.
Still, this book felt good in the way that Scarlett never gave up on what she wanted, and this backfired on her by the end, when she realised she loved Rhett. But he was worn out.
My favourites were Rhett and Melanie. Rhett because even though he was a bad person, he was aware of it, and didn’t want to change it or hide it until Bonnie came into the picture. As for Melanie, she was literally so much more interesting. I wondered what her pov must’ve been like. She was accepting, kind, loyal and so much more.
Again though, this is a complex book so I’m literally just rambling right now. Part 5 did Rhett bad. I genuinely liked Rhett.
I did not like how slow and hurtful Scarlett was when it came to the people who loved her. A big chunk of the book was basically Scarlett not treating her children as well as she could’ve, if she were in a better position, and when getting to a better position she found herself wondering why they cowered in her presence. Like what?
I understand Scarlett was in her 20s this whole book, but surely, no one can be that ignorant. Not without the awareness of their actions. Yet, it was really touching when Scarlett did everything, to the point of ruining her own reputation because it was only hunger, and poverty that she feared.
I liked Scarlett for her gumption, and her strength. To not only support herself, but carry everyone on her back.
A lot of thoughts. I might come back to this.
Tl;dr: Depressing, complex, racist, feministic in a sense. Rhett and Melanie kept me going lol.

Beautifully written with engaging characters. It was also interesting to see the time period from the author’s perspective, as appalling as it was at times.
