I’m mad at how much I enjoyed this haha. So sad, but so good. A little uncomfortable reading about the way black people were described though, but that’s par for the course. It’s a confederacy book after all, and it was really interesting seeing the other side. You begin to hate the ‘yankees’ as much as the characters in the book do, especially because of the devastation they leave behind. Scarlett’s unlikable, but you still root for her.

I have slowly and steadily been reading this mammoth of a book for over three weeks. It was one of the most consuming and atmospheric books that I have ever read and I will not forget it. The story of Scarlett O'Hara is one that many people already know and I was aware of the major plot points before I even started reading. However, to not read this book is a huge disservice to the author because this is an absolute classic. As you read you are put back in time of the Civil War and the period of Reconstruction in Georgia. I am not sure that I have read another book that was so immersive during this period. I felt as though I was at Tara in the sweltering summer heat watching as the story unfolds. I found myself pausing and looking up Generals and events that were mentioned. I wanted to know more about the things that were mentioned and felt so lifelike. I am not going to summarize what this book is about because it is a timeless tale. The author wrote that it is a love story but a love story of the land. I would agree with her and felt that it was a story that many people have forgotten in the 21st century. Scarlett is a despicable character and as I was reading I started to dislike her more and more. When the ending came I felt that she deserved the heartache she was feeling. Even thought she is horrible I can appreciate at how strong she was, how opinionated she was, and how she persevered when others didn't know how. There is no kindness in her and she in an unyielding character. Regardless, she is a character that I will not forget. For me, Rhett Butler was much more like-able and as the story went on that grew. There was a kindness to him that Scarlett did not possess and a thoughtfulness. I also read that the author said Melanie was the hero of the story and I would say that she is. I was not too keen on her at the beginning but that slowly grew to deep admiration. At almost 1000 pages this is a book that requires time and effort to get through but every page is a marvel
