A great book with a clear message, about love and life squandered, the death of eras, and the changing of people. Although slow at times, the end pays off bitterly sweet. I almost wish things had gone differently, but I know it was the way it had to be.

I knew what I was getting into because I had seen the movie, at least I thought I knew.... I had seen snippets of the movie years ago and vowed never to read such a depressing novel. Then this past year the movie was on rerun and played over and over. I was obsessed watching it trying to figure out the characters and what I wasn't understanding. I just had to read the book to find out. This was one of those life changing novels for me.

The historic things I've learned in this book- it was eye opening. I saw the civil war in a whole new light. I had not fully understood the extent of what happened- especially the aftermath. This book took me straight to the heart of all the issues of the war as if I was on the ground watching it unfold with my own eyes. It is by far the most disturbing war to learn about for me. I had never felt as bad for the Confederates like I did after this book. There are some things that the history books just don't explain.

So many characters made me view life in different perspectives. I've struggled with a lot of the internal problems the characters went through such as letting go of the past and moving forward fearlessly, which is why Scarlett's character is so inspiring. Yes, she was horribly self centered most of the time and blind to the good things she had in front of her but throughout the book she doesn't cowardly run away (like she'd like to) from the responsibility of taking care of her family and friends she lays all of the burden on herself and ensures everybody is taken care of- including her arch enemy- Melanie. To me she was not just blind to understanding others but also to understanding herself. I'd like to believe she thought herself more selfish than she really was. All of us have those selfish thoughts we think but what makes them truly selfish is acting on them and more often than not, she doesn't act on them. The imperfections of her character is what makes her so endearing at the same time but maybe I see her through Melanie's eyes and I have trouble viewing her in too harsh of light because of what she endured... And for others. I felt the movie portrayed her in a harsher light than the book but maybe now I understood more the reasoning behind each fowl decision she made.

Rhett was by far my favorite character because of his honesty. He had strong opinions and wasn't afraid to voice them against popular opinion. He told you how it really was and it was refreshing. I lost him a little bit when he reformed so that his daughter wouldn't be snubbed by society. Of course he completely lost himself in the very end. I, like Scarlett, no longer recognized him when he left. That was the most vexing part of the whole book. Not that he left Scarlett but that he left unrecognizable. I would have been better content if he had left as his old self than the broken version.

I honestly felt my love and respect grow for Melanie just like it did with Scarlett. Of course, I feel Scarlett did love Melanie long ago before she realized it but was too blinded by her old habits to clearly see it. I didn't cry during any part in this book until she died. It was Scarlett's biggest loss to me. Her second biggest loss was Rhett.

My other favorite minor character was Old Miss near Tara. Whenever Scarlett went back to Tara it was always refreshing when she talked to Old Miss and I personally liked to relish in her wisdom. Scarlett- did not so much listen. She also liked to tell Scarlett how it was- reminding me a lot of Rhett.

In the end Scarlett held on to the past- just like everyone else did. She held onto the belief that if she had these certain things then she would finally be happy. Long behold those things didn't make her happy and before she realized it she was too late. My heart is truly sore with the ending but it's the only respectful ending there could be. The book was beautifully written and what a tragedy the same author didn't write a sequel (although I don't believe she ever would have). This is by far my favorite book of all time - surpassing Les Miserables even. I didn't have to push through this insanely long novel like I thought I would because I couldn't put it down - practically finishing it in 9 days.

This book has left a permanent impression on me and is, like I said above, a life changing read. I really wish people still had time to read these days so that I could tell them to read GWTW but if I told someone to read a book over 1000 pages they would laugh at me. What a pity to miss out on something like this!

Classic, historical

Didn’t finish. Stopped around pg 250. Not a fan of the writing style or characters. But I am a bit interested in learning how it ends. Pick it up again another time? Or Wikipedia? We shall see..
