The first quarter of the book or so I really enjoyed. Then bam, it hit a wall and exploded into a bad action movie. If I'd had any idea what the premises of this book really were, I wouldn't have read it. But the jacket description sounded really good... Granted this isn't the genre I typically read, and clearly I'll have to be more careful in those I choose in the future. Other reviews say the author is an acclaimed one using a pseudonym. I'd bet big money that whoever it is, it's is a man. The dialogue was really bad, but the action descriptions (car chases, gun slinging, bombs, and bad guys) were done well enough. There were so many action scenes I started skimming past them. If the main male character referred to the protagonist as "babe" one more time, I would've flung the book across the room, and this definitely would've become a DNF book for me - which I was tempted to do several times. Basically, it read like a mediocre action movie. I'm wondering if it was professionally edited for the first several chapters and then the publisher just said "whatever, good enough" and published it. The dialogue wasn't poor in the beginning, as I said, but after that, the female protagonist was saying schlocky crap no woman would ever say. Not even in a mediocre action flick. An indie, B flick...maybe. So if bad action movies with over-done plots are your thing, this book is just for you.

Great read. JFK, Marilyn Monroe, fountain of youth. Russian mafia, Siberia, mothers and daughters. Guns, grenades, high speed chases, and a little romance.

This. Was. Excellent. I think the original premise was fan fiction of a popular Dan Brown book (or so reminiscent of it that Altar of Bones lost out on popularity), but it evolved into so much more. Not since the Nightingale have I been so enthralled with a book that I lose sleep.

In the vein of the Davinci Code but just a little lighter. Interesting, entertaining, and captivating beginning to end. Very much enjoyed this book!

Man this book had thick pages! Maybe I have just been reading books on my kindle too long (R.I.P) and forgot what normal paper is like. This was okay. My dad told me it was awful, so I was expecting something really monstrous and was let down in that respect.

This was quite the book! It literally grabbed me from the first page right until the very end. This book is very fast paced and there’s action on every page. It was not a slow read at all!

It reminded me a little of The DaVinci Code with the hidden icons, conspiracies and all the jet setting to exotic locales. Of course add to that a dash of intrigue and danger and you are in for a wild ride as a reader. There was a lot going on with the plot but the author weaved the story so that it was easy to keep up and know what was going on. I liked that I was left in suspense trying to figure out what would happen next and what everything meant. I could definitely see this book turned into a movie.

My favourite parts were when the main characters Zoe and Riley were in Europe and I was able to live vicariously and feel what it would be like to travel to that part of the world. Mind you I wouldn’t want someone after me trying to kill me!

I would love to know who the author, Philip Carter really is. All I could find out is that he/she is an International Bestselling Author. I googled but came up with nothing. If you know who he/she really is, please let me know!

Read Altar of Bones if you like action and excitement and want a book that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night!

This is definitely a book that conforms well to the genre - fans of Dan Brown will certainly find a pleasurably similar read. While I did appreciate both the story's pace as well as the plot's devices - more localized and thus believable a conspiracy than Brown's trend toward - I did find myself pausing at some of the syntax, and some particularly misogynistic out of place statements sprinkled throughout. Why build up such a strong, independent protagonist only to make her not want to seem uncouth in public multiple times? Why write a sex scene and tell me four times how "hot and wet" said protagonist's mouth is? Overall, not so jarring as to make you want to put it down mid-read but certainly could have used a heavier, perhaps female hand in editing.

This book is filled with action and adventure but after finishing it I feel disappointed. I guess I thought I'd like it better but it was just an OK read.
