I struggled with how unrelatable and frankly boring the narrator was, but luckily the introspection of the second half saved the book for me
I felt great comfort in this book. Very readable and the character’s stoic complexities drew me to the stories end, blooming up until his demise. Will be re-reading.
I think this book will lead to a really interesting discussion at book club. The back cover of my copy says that this is "A terrifying picture of a man victimized by life itself." I do not agree with this at all. He makes really poor decisions which lead to him murdering a man. I never warmed to the main character because of his distant demeanor and I think this is one reason I never saw him as being victimized. It does make me wonder quite a bit about attitudes towards Arabic and Moorish people in Algiers in the era this book was written. My attitude towards the themes in the book could be my viewing it through the modern world and not the time it took place. The trial is very foolish and the evidence of his "character" really has nothing to do with anything. Still, he befriended and trusted a fairly awful person and murdered someone because of his own lack of better judgement.

I'd give it 5 stars for raw quality - it's really thoughtful and interesting - and maybe 2 for enjoyability - it's depressing, and not in the good redeeming way that leaves you feeling better afterward, but with the empty hopelessness that gave Existentialists a bad name (they were not all so depressing...).
