Too much science explanation, zero character development and not that much plot either. Very disappointing considering how popular it is

super chewy sci-fi. fantastic read, scientific explanation and exploration can be dense to wade through as a layperson but concepts are very rewarding and unique.

This book was so boring and lacked a cohesive plot with a reason to care about it. This is the exact type of 'hard sci-fi' that I don't enjoy because it uses very big words and intellectual concepts to hide the lack of plot and plot holes while also failing to provide us with a reason for the characters to care all that much. I can see why people love it -- it's built in a lab to make people who only sort of understand science feel smart, while the author throws out scientific words and language to create a smokescreen in front of the two-dimensional characters and plot holes.
