This was a sweet book, but a few things fell flat for me. I had no problems with the heroine, and found her struggles realistic. The hero, except for his lovely relationship with his daughter, just wasn’t a compelling character to me. I love a thoughtful gentle hero, but some of the things he said felt like the author was checking them off a list (Asks her if it’s okay first, CHECK. Says “I’m sorry you’re hurting, what can I do to help?”, CHECK. Thinks, “She needs to do this her own way, it isn’t about me.”, CHECK). He is a lovely woke feminist hero, but he seemed a bit manufactured to tick off all boxes, and not quite like a real human (there are plenty of lovely woke feminist men out there in real life, I don’t mean that, just that this character didn’t come off very realistically to me). I also thought that the inclusion of a non-binary character was great in theory, but seemed very token, as they had no bearing on plot development, show up or are discussed only a few times, and merely served to show that both the hero and heroine were open, inclusive people.
By far my favorite characters are Rose’s former parents-in-law, who are colorful, loving kooks.
