Teach Me

Olivia Dade

3.7 AVERAGE

4.5, i’m completely in love with olivia dade’s writing oh my god.

3. 75 Star Round up

This book was relatively good. I enjoyed the representation of teachers that care and of a plus size woman.

I just think that part of it was a bit much, the whole thing with the principle or whatever— wasn’t really sure what that was about to be honest.

There was a bit of spice which was good. And their romance was nice, they seemed to really fit well together.

Overall it was a pretty good book, I’m just not sure what else to say about it lol.

so cute!!!!
I loved this, I will definitely be picking up more of Olivia Dade's books!!!

Incredible

This book brought me to the brink of tears three times

3.5 books - great story with terrific writing. Only complaint is the hero is a bit too perfect - he needs some more grit. But happy to read more of this author!

A 100 times yes! I wasn't expecting to loving it as much as I did. I loved the coworkers relationship, the teacher life (I'm not a teacher, so I don't know if it's well represented) but it felt so real, I learned about the job and appreciate teachers so much, this only made me love them harder. I loved the emotional intelligence both characters display, how they approach hard subjects and how they solve their problems. It was amazing.
emotional lighthearted fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Trigger warnings: emotional abuse (in the past), physical abuse (in the past), toxic relationships (in the past), workplace harassment, fatphobia, classism, ableism, mentions of cheating, lockdown drill.

This was just as precious and pure and lovely on reread, although the more I read books about teachers in US schools, the more baffled I am by US school administrators.

Oh, I loved this. Like, a lot. Olivia Dade really nails the realities of working in education. The pointless mind-numbing staff meetings. The kids who break your heart. The kids who make you explode with pride. The lack of time to eat. The endless taking work home with you. The dickheads who get a tiny bit of power and let it go straight to their heads. It's all indescribably accurate.

I loved that both the protagonists are in their 40s and recovering from traumatic relationships in the past. I loved that it's a slow burn and that the romance was sweet and fun and lovely. Sure, elements of it were a little...unlikely. But I didn't care because it was just a joy from start to finish.

Olivia Dade's "Spoiler Alert" was one of my favorite books of last year, so I wanted to give her other books a shot. I usually don't like about teachers and education, because no one gets it right. They romanticize teaching or just have no idea what they're talking about. But I'm really happy to say that I so enjoyed this book, especially the teacher part.

Rose is an awesome teacher and a badass lady who works hard both at her job and at protecting herself. Martin is a lovely soft man who is likewise good at his job, and is also a great dad.

I liked the "taking down the man" plot line, although I found the "in-laws throwing money and influence at the problem" story silly and improbable.

I would honestly read so many more books about this adorable couple and their teaching adventures.

3.5 stars.

This book was extremely enjoyable, short, and had likeable characters. It’s definitely not something that’s going to stick with me, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading Rosé’s and Martin’s story.

I enjoyed this book, although not quite as much as Dade’s other book, “Spoiler Alert”.
I find Dade fantastic at the fat-positive romance genre, but otherwise missing the finer points of a good romance novel.
This book took a while for me to get into, as I didn’t particularly like or warm to the main character (Rose) for a while. Even by the end of the book I wasn’t fully sold - she wasn’t dislikable, she just didn’t feel particularly well formed and I still didn’t full understand her character. Her love interest, Martin, is written to be her opposite but I got frustrated at his writing too!
Martin is recently divorced and moved town to spend one more year with his daughter before she heads off to college. So far, so good - he’s obviously a caring man, who is a good father and loves his daughter. However, I think these character tropes were pushed too far and hammered in too much, with multiple references to essentially how he wasn’t like other men, knew when to listen etc.
The plot was pretty ok, although it was hard to grapple with the time jumps, and each chapter I had to work out what point of time we were starting from (is this following on, or the next morning, or 2 weeks later?). The most disconcerting jump was
Spoiler at the end of one chapter they’re practicing a shooting drill, Rose and Martin are left with no where to hide and about to face off and then.....suddenly it’s the next day?
What an anti climax!

For a Romance novel the single sex scene was also pretty meh. Again, I think the message of consent and communication were hammered a little too hard - when I’m reading a sexy book I don’t want to stop midway through the action for them to discuss what they like, in a very non-sexy way!

Ultimately, I did enjoy reading this, but it didn’t cause me any particularly strong emotions and I won’t be reading the next one is this apparent series.
