This was such a great book!!! I think I would give it a 5 star if I could relate to the characters more. But overall, the story was well written. The author threw in some great words that had me reaching for a dictionary- her use of the English language is clearly exceptional.
And OMG Rose and Martin are almost like reverse sunshine but SOOOOOO much better. Both of them are so multidimensional. I loved the high school teacher aspect- kept it fun and realistic (since I am a teacher).
My biggest issue was that these characters are way too mature and thoughtful for their own good. But I know I am one of the few that like the misunderstanding/miscommunication plot in books- this book totally lacked that immature but very relatable piece.
Overall if you like smutty romance that is more on the "woke" side and quite grown-up/ mature plot.... this is definitely for you!

This was miles and miles and miles better than Spoiler Alert. But this cover is the worst.
THIS WAS SO CUTE?! I WAS NOT EXPECTING?!
on another note... My God, can someone just date me already... God, how long can "not a girl, not yet a woman" wait? Do you get it?!
Do you get the reference?!

This wasn’t bad but it definitely wasn’t great either. I almost DNF at both 32% and 53% but decided to power through. It just didn’t capture me much

This is such a sweet story revolving around two mature and evolved people - it was all very refreshing. I enjoyed the main characters immensely and, while I could have used a little bit more excitement, this was a nice single-afternoon/evening read.
3.5, with an extra half a star awarded for making a bunch of teaching in jokes and ensuring that I’ll never be able to unhear which teaching buzzwords are dirty af.
A delightfully entertaining romantic romp filled with Dade’s signature gentleness, both towards her characters and in the way the characters treat one another. It never pretends to be anything other than what it is ( female centered erotic romance that also breaks down toxic masculinity) and tbh, it was a balm to read on the first day of this lockdown. My heart feels quite a bit lighter!
P.S. a super quick read so perfect for a pick me up!

If you are looking for a quick low angst romance between two older MC's, that is full of steam, fun and flirty banter this is the book for you. Rose is described as an ice queen, and I get that from her to an extent. But she is so much more. She is a devoted teacher, she is plus size and not ashamed of who she is. Marcus was such an adorable dad, a great teacher and I loved that he was so into April. One thing that I loved about this book is that there was no miss/non communication. Both April and Marcus were very vocal about their needs, their wants and their expectations both in life and in the bedroom. Speaking of bedroom those scenes were well done. I appreciated the fact that April's body wasn't glossed over. We knew that Marcus was making love to a fat woman and loving every minute of it. I really liked all the secondary characters in this book, I love the school setting, and the fact that the MC were both in their 40s oh and the grovel scene was perfect. I will say that the end felt a little rushed as far as making plans for the future and I would have loved if the epilogue was years or at least months later. But ultimately I adored this book. As soon as I finished I picked up book two.
I think this is the fifth Olivia Dade I’ve read and o think this absolutely confirms my love of her!! She knows how to do sweet and pining and sexy all in one book. I loved Rose, Martin, and Bea - and I want my own version of Annette and Alfred. Excited to read more in the Maryville series!
This is easily my favorite Olivia Dade book. Older characters finding love! YES. Martin is such a delightful cinnamon roll and a fantastic dad. I literally swooned at how good he is at empowering his teenage daughter. Rose is a fantastic character as well and I liked how pushy they both were by the end because they know what they deserve in a relationship, all the while being reflective that they each needed some different things and eventually (after some melodrama) finding a way that they both feel supported. My biggest hangup was during the school lockdown drill. During the drill is the first time that Martin acknowledges he’s in love with Rose while she’s pretending to block children from a school shooter and he’s internally waxing how admirable she is as a protector of her students. I can’t exactly put my finger on why this bugged me so much but I guess it felt a little too much like roleplaying being a hero when they’re not actually in that situation. But he’s giving her all the virtue points anyway. I know that it’s pretty much a universal truth that teachers IRL are protective of their students and many would sacrifice themselves for the safety of their students in that situation, but something about it just didn’t work for me by the way it’s described.
