This was such a great read. Honestly, this story gripped me right from the first sentence and didn't let go until the last sentence. My only complaint is that it is on the short side. However, adding too much more to it would have taken away from it's charm, so really, even my complaint adds to its perfection.
I greatly enjoyed the sort of hazy confusion that surrounds the story. Right along with the narrator, we're confuzed and unsure of what's truly going on, but as the narrator stumbles out of a hotel room he didn't remember being in, the author's attention to detail makes us just as sick and dizzy as he is as he checks out. By the time we make it to the taxi, we know that something is wrong.
The sense of confusion and dread follow us through the piece, leading us to its gruesome ending. I quite enjoyed the fact that while we do know what happens to the narrator and his family, the reasons for why are still surrounded by mystery. The last sentence left me craving more, wishing for another story, another chapter, anything that might help me get to the bottom of the mystery. I don't say this as a negative, since it wasn't done in such a way that I feel that the story itself is incomplete.
If you're looking for something terrifying that will leave you shaking and looking over your shoulder when you turn the lights off, this story won't work for that. The horror comes from the immense sense of unease and wrongness that follows us from the first line to the last.
