I did not really like the language of the book. The colloquial speech was a bit difficult to read and put me to sleep on an early flight (probably my own issue as I'm not a native English speaker). But I enjoyed the premise of the book. The metaphors were relevant and well laid out. Lennie's character was beautifully written and my heart was breaking for him.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck – Review
(🇬🇧+🇩🇪)

Of Mice and Men (1937) is about farm workers who travel from place to place to make a living. They rarely build meaningful relationships with the people around them, which leads to prejudiced characters yearning for connection. Lennie and George are different: Lennie is tall, strong and mentally disabled. George is less sturdy, but wittier and took Lennie under his wing. While dreaming for something better, they miss what they already have – for we all know how easily dreams can shatter.

This short story is told almost like a play. For  each chapter the scene is carefully set. The main themes are loneliness and prejudices. I won’t mention them here, but maybe have a look at the content warnings.

Overall: definitely worth a read! It left me with quite a bit to think about.

____

It was interesting to read the story, especially with the dialects. Apart from that, I did not really connect with the characters and the plot so I would not consider reading it again.
