"A guy needs somebody—to be near him.” He whined, “A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he’s with you. I tell ya,” he cried, “I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick"- Crooks

nice read! wish would've ended differently...

While I definitely have been made to overthink this book as I studied it for my GCSE English Literature, Steinbeck does an excellent job at poignance through subtleties, and the plot is simple but effective and relevant to the time

I read it in high school, I remember laughing every time they swore. I almost cried, it was so heartfelt.

can’t believe i listened to tiktok again and got crushed like this (a compliment). not much was going on in the story and I appreciated that it got straight to the point without much ado or filler paragraphs. The simplicity of the story is what makes it a tragedy: a dream, hope; reality crashing down and killing it. The dream catches on, inspires joy in a lifeless heart and hope is poisonous, and despite. One knows life will come in the way, expects the world to say no and still, despite rationale and reason, one hopes. The dream is close to the touch, and as close as it gets: gone.
