7th book of August 2022 and 24th of the year:
“I leave the lipstick on. Bright things in nature are often poisonous. Let that be my defense, then. Let Aspen watch and predators prowl and all the waiting jaws yawn wider. I will be a ruin to consume.” - Ryan La Sala.
Described as Heathers meets Midsommer, The Honeys follows Mars, a genderfluid teen, after their twin sister’s traumatic death as he goes back to a camp with dangerous secrets. It was original, twisted, eerie, and very well-written, and I loved that it had amazing Genderfluid and queer representation in it, challenged gender norms/roles, had creepy and vivid imagery that made you feel like you’re right there in the woods with them, and explored toxic masculinity, grief, acceptance, gender, and finding your community/place in the world where you’re accepted for who you are. I did kind of piece together what was going on earlier on, but it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of it. In fact, I didn’t want to put it down, so I definitely recommend picking it up!
The TWs will be put further down because they contain spoilers. Also, a warning if you listen to the audiobook, it has effects/sounds in the background and some of them are bees/bugs, so be prepared for that. I have a little difficulty with understanding the audiobook when there’s added audio, so I had to rewind in a few places which was annoying, but it didn’t affect me too much overall📚💀🍯🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
{SPOILER ALERT} TWs for violence, death, child death, child abuse, death of a parent, blood/gore, murder, body horror, injuries, homophobia, transphobia, gaslighting, sexism, misogyny, bullying, fire/fire injury, cannibalism, trypophobia, cancer, bees/bugs throughout, and grief.
Graphic: Misogyny, Transphobia, Blood, Cannibalism, Child death, Death, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail, Body horror, Homophobia, Violence, Sexism, Bullying, Gaslighting, Gore, Murder, Cancer, Child abuse, and Grief
