After Midnight Man I was expecting a much better sequel. The beginning looked promising, but as I kept on reading I got so bored of all the sex scenes.
Bud and Claire are both very poorly written characters, there's nothing compelling about them, they are both your typical hero and heroine. The alpha male, overprotective detective and the 25-year-old fragile spoiled little heiress virgin.
Nothing about Midnight Run was interesting or fascinating, except for when Suzanne and John made an appearance.
Midnight Run could've been avoided all together to be honest, it just served as a bridge for what I believe the third book is going to be about, Allegra and alpha male number three. Hopefully that one is going to be a much better read.

This is an older release from Lisa Maria Rice so I’m playing a little catch up on my TBR pile. I’m not sure what it is about her heroes but I just love them. A lot of times they are big, dangerous, and not one for small talk and I fall in love with every one. Bud is just the same. He’s been working an undercover assignment to take down the Russian mob but one look at Claire in a bar and he knows that she’s different from the normal clientele. Claire spent years in a hospital waiting to die but now that she has recovered she’s ready to make major changes in her life. The first is to have the 'bar experience' but when she’s left by her friend she needs to make the quick decision if Bud is trustworthy. What they both expect to be a weekend of new experiences becomes something they can’t let go of by Monday. But can Bud and Claire find happiness when all of their secrets are laid on the table? This is book two in the Midnight series and even thought this could be read as a standalone I think it’s best read in order. Great read!
I can't help myself. I have a soft spot for Lisa Marie Rice and her Over Alpha heroes. I don't even mind her drippy heroines too much.
By rights, when I do a clearly objective inventory of stuff that I enjoy or works for me in a book, every single thing about this book should be in the 'No' column. I mean if you told me that this book features a plot where H/h meet in a bar, the heroine (who is a virgin) takes the guy home and they begin having Super Sexy Sex all weekend, are in love and engaged by the end of the weekend -- I should be saying 'uh...no.' But that is the weird alchemy that this author seems to work in her books for me.
Seriously, the fact that the hero, Bud, can keep it up ALL. NIGHT. LONG. With no breather and no....er...um...diminishment in between should be a serious eye-roller for me.
Or how about this gem?:
By rights this should be wall-banging material. But I can't help myself. I liked Bud's go-get-'em attitude. You gotta love a guy who manages to side-schedule in some household chores and a ball-game into an all-day sex-fest. To be fair, he does multi-task as he and Claire actually have sex while he watches the game. But that is just how Bud rolls.
Yeah, yeah, yeah there is some other stuff about murderers, kidnappers and jewel thieves ...blah,blah blah but none of that is nearly as much fun as simply wallowing in the sheer uber-maleness that is Bud.
For LMR fans or readers who love their heroes to be on the Super Alpha side this book is a must!

'I'm going to fuck you all day... when I said all day, I meant it. We'll stop to eat and I'll put up those shelves I saw in your storeroom earlier...maybe I'll catch the game this afternoon. Recover a little. But the rest of the day you'll be on your back, or on top or in whatever position you want to be, as long as I'm inside you...I'll let you wear clothes," he growled rough;y as he spread his fingers, opening her up..."but no underwear."

If you want extremely descriptive coitis for chapters on end, then this is the book for you. I found the story itself okay. It took a long time (because of all the f**king) to actually get to the meat...no pun intended. The author then wraps up the ending neat, tidy and quick.
I was disappointed because I had very much enjoyed MIDNIGHT MAN by Ms Rice, which is book 1 of the MIDNIGHT series.

2.5 stars. In the same vein as the first book, would have been a 3 star but near the end Bud got a wee bit annoying for me.

I thought it strange, being the 2nd book in a series, when it started out taking place about 10 days prior to where the 1st book started. Usually the next book in the series takes place after the events of the 1st book in the series. I thought, maybe this is just a prologue? Nope. Especially confusing since the H and h in this book figure prominently in the 1st book.
Eventually, about 60-70% thru the book you get to the events that take place in the 1st book of the series, and then the plot moves on beyond that. (Note: if you were disappointed at the end of the 1st book that there was no epilogue, you kind of get that here. Though it's only a couple of weeks past the events of the 1st book, not like years down the road.)
Have book #3 reserved @ the library. You can tell at the end that the next book is going to pick up where this one ends.

Mostly enjoyable with some glaring weaknesses
For the most part I enjoyed this second book in the trilogy. However the precipitating events, and the characters reactions to them are just completely out of line for the character development we've seen in both books. There are also quite a few things that occur which really need more detail...the reader has to take quite a few things on faith, feeling like they might have missed a chapter somewhere.
I was particularly irritated by the ending scene because the way we came to know John from book 1 there is absolutely no way on this good earth he would have gone into that situation unarmed. Additionally the author never bothers to account for what happened to what should have been huge security at such an event. It's all to implausible. Rice could have achieved the same end result she clearly wanted with better and more realistic writing of that scene. Additionally I find it highly unlikely that Claire would have responded to Bud's presence at the event and treatment of her in the way it is presented. Once again, it is not in keeping with the way the character was developed throughout the book.
But overly I really did enjoy the book and am on to book 3 right now!
