This one was a beautifully written romance that tugged on my heartstrings. The love story between Jack and Ellie and all the turns it could’ve taken was thought provoking. Some parts and bits of the characters reminded me of my own grandparents and their love story. While I loved Jack’s sureness and Ellie’s drive, at times they didn’t seem quite as well rounded as they could’ve been. I loved that the book started with their origin story, but I wished there had been some more details from Jack’s perspective of their time apart. Their second chance was definitely a roller coaster that felt true to their dynamic and personalities, but it felt rushed. The ending came full circle in an emotional and heartfelt way. This book brought tears to my eyes because of how real and honest it felt.

"Easing away from the dock, Jack looked out over the lake, the calm water reflecting the soft violet of twilight. Entering the main channel, he directed the boat in a wide arc around the sandbar and sped north, soundless flashes of lightening lit the sky like fireworks."

"A little further up they motored past the island where he'd taken Ellie the first day they'd met from there, the boat moved into uncharted territory at least for Ellie. Jack had navigated that stretch of water many times, but not since the previous summer and never with a girl."

I finished this audiobook a few weeks ago but keep forgetting to write a review. So here goes.

This is a small town romance through and through. All about Jack and Ellie, starting in 1950s and through war time and beyond. How, through it all they continued to hold hope and love for each other even though they were no longer together, as life has greatly intervened. But eventually life pulls them back together. It's a sweet story. Slow going, very much so, but sweet. I listened to it slowly as an audiobook. It was interesting with the accents. Not sure what else to say but I was very happy that it ended happily.
