I have my detailed review over on the blog but overall this book is so well written. Almost too good! Vanessa has done a fantastic job at creating an eery atmosphere and vibe. I felt sick and very anxious during and after this read. Whilst reading it almost felt like I was in a lucid dream. It is very creepy and makes you on edge the whole way through.

I read pretty much the entire book in one sitting and oh my word. I definitely will say to read or even approach with caution and mean it when I put TRIGGER WARNING. It touches on some very sensitive topics.

Great read but very intense!

This book was very slooooow for a thriller, and it really should be a 3 star rated book, but the ending bumped it up to 3.5 stars. If it was cut down 100 pages and edited a bit more, it would be perfect- the author is great at capturing the creepy atmosphere of living out in the English woods, and the secrets that the villagers all hide from one another. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of a bit too stretched out version of the mini-series The Stranger. If you like thrillers that build up to the crazy reveal, pick this one up.

Quick thoughts: Two sisters went to the woods, but only one came back alive. Ten years later, Tess is still trying to remember what happened to her sister. I enjoyed this atmospheric and well-written thriller that grabbed me from the very start.

Thank you the publisher for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

Loved the story and all the twists and turns. Absolutely hated the main character. Perfect example of an unreliable narrator NOT fucking up a story.

Tess has never recovered from her sister dying when they were in their teens. But when Tess gets a call from her father telling her that their stepmother has been brought home to die peacefully, Tess must face what she’s been avoiding for ten years… the woods behind their house where her sister died and the buried memories of that night.

The Woods is 370 pages long and took me two days to read.

I’m giving this a 3 out of 5. I was so invested in this story and was disappointed with what felt like an abrupt ending. I wish it would have been just a little longer and that certain aspects of the book were different. I won’t get into those aspects because I don’t want to spoil the book but overall liked it.

Thank you, Grand Central Publishing, for sending me this copy!

Here’s to the adventure of finding a novel novel!

First off, I really liked our protagonist. Flawed and unpleasant, but makes the book that much more interesting. She’s out here threatening to throw a child out of a window. Welcome back Jaime Lannister.

What really make the book less interesting was its end. There a good aura of suspicion on two characters who are acting shady and on our POV’s unreliable memory, but the culmination wasn’t super believable. Cutting the “is the neighbor a creep” plot was probably needed honestly. It felt like an add-on that distracted from the emotional climax of
accidental siblicide. Although, note, I doubt she would have faced jail time. Pressing charges for an accidental death one party forgot while very young seems unlikely, but who knows.

A soft thriller and a good mystery book. The beginning was a bit hard to get through and there were a lot of names and characters to get used to. However once you get to the middle of the book, the mystery starts to intrigue you. The twists weren’t super predictable however at times some characters were made to be ‘villians’ so it was quite obvious that they were not. The narrator, Tess, was quite annoying and selfish at times which made it a tad frustrating to read. Overall a good book but the reveals weren’t too shocking.

This is a story of death, murder, rape, and amnesia.

Unfortunately the FMC is insufferable to listen to and, if you listen to the rest of the characters, be around in general.

Tess comes back home after 10 years because her stepmom is dying. She’s avoided coming home due to her mothers death, sisters death, and fathers remarriage.

Also, her new stepmom left the neighbors family to join hers because why not. So now everyone is bitter and unhappy.

It’s a fine story but I really did not like Tess and she’s an embarrassment to her namesake. Although the story is predictable if you know the story of the OG Tess.

“Once upon a time, two girls went into the woods and only one came out…”

As the girl stood there alone, she realized she was the monster and not a little girl at all...

Tess and her sister are close but that all changes when a new family moves into the village and their relationship becomes strained. One evening she and Bella walk into the woods but only she "walks" out. After their argument she has no recollection of what happened to Bella, when she wakes in the hospital, or the fact that her sister's dead.

10yrs later she still has no memory of that night and what happened to Bella. She gets a disturbing call from her dad that her stepmother isn't doing too well. So she, reluctantly, packs her bags and goes back home. Once she gets there though everything starts unfolding and she slowly, bit by bit, piece by piece, starts remembering the awful thing that happened that night. Her sisters killer is much closer to home than she realised...
