this book was impressive. the world building was impeccable, the characters were evocative, the tension was palpable throughout.

the connections ikenna forms and the connections that are betrayed are heartwarming and heartbreaking and everything in between. i wish we could have had more time exploring reed’s connection with her grandfather and what that means for the two of them, platonically if not romantically.

Written like a YA. interesting premise, but the writing was often distracting.

The book was written in a way that is very YA.  Some of the immature language/names of things I found distracting (like the there was gun called a starsploder) But the ideas behind the plot is good. I like the ideas of the blood trials and the magic system was super cool but I wanted a more adult novel. If you like YA I think you’d love this book just not for me.

Firstly I need to stay that I am appalled that this book has not need reviews more. Idk if people are just not rating it or if y’all are just sleeping in this duology but you are all doing yourself a disservice because this is an absolutely amazing story. But I digress. This is a wonderful, impressive, immersive, detailed, totally original absolutely fantastic and stunning story. I loved every moment of reading this book. Ikenna or Kenna, but only if your family, is an absolute badass for all the the terrible bullshit and racism and inequality she has gone through. She has shown what an absolute girl boss she is and that she can literally take any one on regardless of there status or rank. I won’t go into too many details because YOH NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. But this is the book we all need of a heroic warrior who all of us girls can look up to and aspire to be like in some kind of way. Please do yourself a favor and read this duology.
