This was a fun, cute read. It had a good mix of the magical and the ordinary, day-to-day struggles of a middle schooler trying to live up to their parents expectations. Winnie's shamanism is just one more element of her life where the expectations feel insurmountable and she feels that she isn't good enough. The relationships between the characters felt real, the magic system was fun and the pacing and action scenes were well done.

My friend said reading this book is like it's really written by a middle grader which is a good thing and I felt that!!!

Atmospheric and fast pace, Winnie Zeng is an enjoyable, and light reading. It started off very funny on how Winnie explained middle school through her eyes. It infused with academic rival dynamic turned team mate, turn friends, and dealing with Chinese legend spirit who roamed the earth and the cause of the troubles recently. Finding that she is a shaman, Winnie fought her away against evil spirits using MOON CAKES!!! and a COOKBOOK!!!

It also dwells in how her family of Chinese American strive. Straight As, piano lessons, feeling never good enough and being compared to, and facing the bully when she brought Chinese food for lunch. It's reflective in a way. Whether to prioritize saving a lot of people, or prove yourself to make the people closest to you proud.

All and all, the only reason I didn't give it a 5⭐ is bcs some sentences were repetitive and don't have to be emphasized that much. Other that that, It's a great great middle grade book!!!!

Pssst It's also an English beginner friendly book 😍😍

This book follows the relatively tried and true formula of middle grade mythology retellings/ continuations. It was a quick, fun read that does not really break the mold save for the fact that Winnie, around halfway through the book, gets fed up with the expectations placed on her and declines the opportunity to fulfill her shaman duties. This proves pivotal for her character growth.

I love it when one book I’ve read leads to me understanding what is going on in another one.

In this case, having read “Daughter of the Moon Goddess” has led me to getting what is going on in Winnie Zeng unleashes a legend.

The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is in honor of Moon Goddess, Chang’e, who was married to the archer Hou Yi.

Winnie decides that her classmates will love to eat mooncakes, which is one of the delicacies of the festival, so she finds her Lao Lao’s (her grandmother) cookbook, and cooks them following those directions. Up until this point, the book appears to be about how hard middle school is when you don’t fit in.

But, upon making the moon cakes, she calls up the spirit of her dead Lao Lao and learns that she is a shaman, and has magical powers she needs to cultivate to fight evil spirits.

What I loved about this book is that it remains a book about how hard it is to fit into middle school, despite all the magic that happens. That she has to balance saving her town with getting ready for her piano recital so she doesn’t disappoint her mother.

It remains totally relatable to readers, while having the magic happening around them.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. I lovd that is tackled both the hardships of middle school like friendship and family dymancis and also the hard part of being a hero. I also loved diving into chinese mythology and love the love hate dymanics between the two characters. It was a rather quick read and one that I really enjoyed!! I am excited to read more by this auhor in the future!!

Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Children’s for the ARC of this!

This was so cute and fun, Winnie has the perfect narrative voice. I loved the characters and the plot was well-paced. Definitely recommend for fans of Percy Jackson and Aru Shah!
