Metro Girl

Janet Evanovich

3.45 AVERAGE

Genre: kidnapping, treasure hunting, psychopaths, etc.
Summary: Alex Barnaby "Barney" grew up in a mechanic shop, so she knows her way around cars. When her good-for-nothing brother "Wild" Bill calls her in the middle of the night. Alex knows something is wrong, so she flies down to Miami to help him out. In Miami, she finds out that Bill stole NASCAR Sam Hooker's boat, and he'd like it back. Hereafter comes a long list of everything that could go wrong, does. Alex and Sam manage to find Bill, piss off a crazy Cuban revolutionist, uncover buried treasure and a hidden Russian chemical bomb, run afoul of government goons and everything in between.
Response: I always feel like Evanovich has the craziest storylines. LIke, Michael Bay would be the perfect director for her movies. Or the Fast and Furious guys. I like Alex character. She is a little foolhardy, but strong character with a decent backstory. Hooker is just crazy but somehow likable still.

I used to enjoy the Stephanie Plum books before I burnt out on them, so I thought I'd try this when I was in need of a light read. Meeeeeh. Dumb plot, dumb characters, dumb everything.

Book #35 read in 2012

This is NOT a graphic novel as the description states.

Of all the Janet Evanovich series books, this one was my least favorite. I'm not a fan of the characters or the plot in this one.

Alexandra Barnaby, Barney for fun, is an engine guru from Baltimore. Her brother, Bill, or rather Wild Bill, is king of impulsive decisions and getting into trouble whilst living in Miami. After a string of eerie events revolving Bill, Barney teams up with NASCAR guy, Sam Hooker, in Miami as a hunt for her brother and his missing boat ensues.

If you are a Stephanie Plum fan, you’ll enjoy this book, very familiar characters, structure, and pacing to Plum series.

As the book is nautical themed and set in glamorous Miami, this book is a perfect beach read. Metro Girl is a lighthearted treasure hunt for brothers, gold, and a mysterious object with Cuban heritage.

I just didn't find the main characters believable enough to pull off everything they do in the story. It was alright.

ugh...if I had to read the phrase "Nascar guy" one more time.
adventurous funny lighthearted

Loveable characters: Yes

Fun.

Love it! I couldn’t stop reading this book. I soo want it something to happen between them because the NASCAR driver was definitely hot and i didn’t even saw him. She reminded me a lot of Stephanie from Plums series with her not so much luck but always finds a way out but i didn’t mind. Great book, on to the next one.

Not a Stephanie Plum book. This introduces Alex "Barney" Barnaby, an insurance company employee from Baltimore, who has come to Miami to bail her brother "Wild Bill" out of trouble again, as the good older sister usually does.

The plot revolves around Bill and his new girlfriend taking a boat to Cuba to rescue buried (by her father) treasure. The problem is that there are two other competing factions chasing after Bill, willing to risk the wrath of Barney and NASCAR Man (loosely based on Jeff Gordon?), involved because Bill 'borrowed' his boat for this excursion.

It's a funny book, lightweight enough nearly to float, but containing some laugh-out-loud moments, as any Evanovich book must. While Barney is slightly easier on cars than Stephanie (none explode), she is just as good at blindsiding scary people with appropriately-placed kicks and use of whatever's available to physically intimidate them.

This is not Literature. But it is pretty fun to read.
