Finally finished Ruin by John Gwynne and feel defeated. Ruin picks up not long after the end of Valour, our heroes are forging paths back to one another, the enemies are working hard in the shadows. At the end of this book everything feels pretty hopeless and I really hope that the second book has a rallying moment where everything can be okay again, or at least okay as it can be for a grimdark fantasy series. There were pockets of joy in this book that I’m really trying to hold on to.

This book completely took over my life now. Can’t even sleep as I just want to read read read. Absolute doorstopper of a book yet it feels light. The time jumps are logical. The usage of animal characters is fantastic. Satisfying deaths. The penultimate book is where most series lose their steam because they try to stretch the book as they can’t end it all before the actual final book. Not much of an issue for Ruin. The battle sequences kept me on the toes. The final sequences in this book are unlike anything I ever read.
