Wanted to like this much more than I did. I can suspend a lot of disbelief, but it's distracting in this book at times. I also get really annoyed when an author writes a young woman who is supposed to be a heroine and everything just happens around and to her- instead of because of her.

I'm willingly to go back to book 2, this was Grove's first attempt.

I don't want to be a party pooper, and this has gotten marvelous reviews, but I've started this book twice...got to about page 45 the first time, then reread from the beginning the second time to page 88. I just can't get into it at all. It may get better, but I'm not willing to give it any more time.

This is a beautifully written story with a level of worldbuilding and detail like no other. It moves at a pace that should feel slow, but the pages are filled with so much intricacy you float along with the characters.
I am very much looking forward to book 2.
It has been likened to the Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, but this story is better;).

The Great Disruption of 1799 has changed the course of time. Different continents are in different Ages, and moving between them can be dangerous. Sophia lives with her Uncle Shadrock, the famous cartologer, in Boston in 1891. She has been living with him since her parents left when she was very young, off to help rescue a fellow explorer in an unknown Age. She returns one day to find their house ransacked and Uncle Shadrock missing. He managed to leave her a small note and a cryptic map. This starts her off on an adventure. An excellent book for fans of dystopian worlds and alternate realities. Recommended for grades 5-8.

An enjoyable and imaginative world, but it took me quite a while to get into it.

Actual rating 3.5 (?)
Not sure about this one, the writing style didn't quite grab me, and while I think the premise was certainly interesting, there was too much going on to really explore any one thing?

Similarly, it felt like there was more telling than showing in some scenes, which was a little dull to read. I'm also a bit confused about the title, as it doesn't quite seem to fit with the events.

I enjoyed this book. The way the book was created was really fun and I fell in love with Theo. It had some similarities to The Golden Compass in my opinion. Like she lived with her uncle but then in the Golden Compass Lord Asriel is her father. I liked this book review done.

I bought this book because of its cover, I love maps and cardinal roses and a nice deckled edge. It called to me from the bottom row in the children's section at Barnes and Nobles. I had to have it! So I bought it after only skimming the jacket.

It must have been divine intervention that lead me to the book because I devoured this book! There is so much going for it. An interesting steampunk vibe. A series of religions with rules and backstories to make Brandon Sanderson proud. A plucky heroine who has a problem with time. Missing parents, a kidnapped uncle, and new friend found covered in feathers at a circus. It was a glorious read. Yes it was a little predictable and some of the key details should have been fleshed out a little bit more but over all an addicting read. Also I really think that this is a book more appropriate for Young Adult than Middle Grade. There are some terrifying moments and a madwoman. So use caution if you are looking at this for children. 14+ is my reccomendation.

(I have been watching a lot of Murdoch Mysteries on Netflix. Yannick Bisson would make a great Shadrack)

Read the book!
