Ultimate War is a big step up from what has been a mostly disappointing run of Ultimate X-Men for me. The bulk of Millar's story feels like a three way philosophical chess match between Magneto, the X-Men and the Ultimate. It is smart and thoughtful and the ending slugfest is well earned.

As always, I'm bored and annoyed at any plotline revolving around two people fighting due to miscommunication. Just because this case has two big super teams fighting for that reason doesn't make it more interesting. However, I did enjoy seeing the X-Men cope with being in hiding, seeing Iceman stand up for them, and the moment when Wolverine begs Jean Grey to cover Kitty's eyes so she can't see him brutally murdering their attackers. Really, the most interesting bits of this comic involved the X-Men team dynamic changing due to Cyclop's mysterious death, Jean Grey recovering from the Phoenix ordeal, and the team handling how Beast getting catfished kind of resulted in the death of 800+ people. This already had so many interesting plots going on that the Ultimates showing up to fight the X-Men was just an annoying thing taking focus away from better plots.
