This is one of my favorite dystopian books. It’s poignant yet heartwarming and emphatic. Klara the AF is more human than the humans. I like how Ishiguro showed the vulnerabilities of human yet we’re not capable to replace the feeling we have to our loved ones. The deep and level of love we give someone would always be unique. We may love others but it won’t be the same love we have given to someone.

I think, similarly to Never Let Me Go, I willed myself to like this more than I actually did. The story telling leaves me a little flat. As does the theme of disposable relationships with others and with technology.

Klara, our AI lead character, is easy to feel for, and wish the best for. And it is clear that the moral and ethical circumstances that play out in the book for Klara are aimed to provoke consideration and low-level outrage. I guess I felt this aspect was a little heavy handed.

That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the issues raised and the story telling. I guess I wanted to feel more swept up but didn't.

I borrowed this as an audiobook from my local library on the Libby app. Support your local library!

The writing style was really not for me. I felt very uncomfortable and had a horrible sense of foreboding
