Read this for the PopSugar 2021 challenge as my “90’s bestseller!” For the most part, it was totally fun and exciting. Even having seen the movie, knowing what’s going to happen, this was enjoyable. I mean, everyone who read this book probably knew what was going to happen anyway. A remote island full of velociraptors and a T-Rex? Where everyone keeps saying it’s 100% safe and under control? What could go wrong?? What I didn’t love, of course, was the majorly white straight male cast with the token minority (who doesn’t survive) and the inherent sexism. One female character only, and one of her main plot points is that she wears shorts! Wow! Also holy cow the little girl Lex was ridiculously annoying in the book. I don’t remember her being so insufferable in the movie. At times it felt like this was written by a frustrated adolescent conputer geek boy who hates his sister, lol. What I did enjoy most here was somewhat lost in the movie: the discussion of scientific progress in our modern world, including its limits and drawbacks. It’s certainly a theme in the movie, but the book gets to spend more time on this topic. I really enjoyed Jeff Goldblum’s–I mean, Ian Malcom’s discussion of chaos theory especially.

I mean, dinosaurs and Ian Malcolm. What's not to love?
