Fascinating read but I am left with many questions…I also feel the author tried too hard to be impartial, which ultimately came off as confusing and disingenuous.

I found every aspect of this book well written, fascinating, and beautiful. It’s hard to romanticize a criminal without romanticizing the crime, and to paint a picture of the human behind the thefts without portraying him falsely as a good person, and yet Finkel manages it masterfully. You’re left feeling as though you are the one who has sat in the interrogation rooms and been overcome with shock as each of the 200+ pieces you’ve laid out has been claimed. Reading this, the reader is left in a state of tug-of-war between admiration and disbelief. Disbelief both that this was possible and that someone could ignore the social barriers in place that typically prevent this.
Genuinely such a good read.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s about Stéphane Breitwieser, the world’s “greatest” art thief who is still alive. The story is really compelling, unpacking his motivations, his compulsion to steal, his love of beautiful things and the very small circle of relationships he has/had throughout his life. Truly fascinating, especially when he begins to get caught, and the confessions pour in. Highly recommend to all.
