A really enjoyable deep-dive into the most prolific (and unusual) art thief of all time. I did not feel as though the author valorized the crimes or the criminals, as is so often the critique of these sorts of books. It’s a fascinating, even-handed, and very well written exploration of a tragic, but riveting, case.

As I always start my reviews: I'm no expert in literature but this book was amazing. It's written in a way that anyone could understand the story without being an arts expert. Easy read but with lifetime knowledge left behind.

Stephane Breitweiser is a bad man. Yet, Finkel does not portray him as such. Instead, he offers us a glimpse into the almost unbelievably true story of a man (although a mad man) who did what he did out of love, not something so dirty as economic profit. This made the conclusion for both Breitweiser and “his” art, the great love of his life, all the more tragic.
