cw : depression; death; blood; self-harm; bullying; animal death
The first thing to know is that I did it backwards and watched the serie first haha. And after that, I absolutely wanted to read the books. I was told that, since it was published in 2007, there would be things that would annoy me and so on.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised with what I read ! I expected the worst, for safety, and the worst was not really there. Obviously, yes, there are flaws, but I've read worse things while it was written recently.
We have the point of view of Rose, who is the main character therefore, and I must say that often, she made me roll my eyes and I wrinkled my nose a lot ! But despite everything, she is a character who can evolve, who is not closed to that. It feels in the reading, and that, I liked it a lot ! For the other characters, my favorite at the moment is Christian !
The created universe is really "nice", it's vampires, but not only ! This story around guardians, royals etc. Really nice to discover !
And for to the cw; I want to say that the portrait around depression, self-harm, it was something that was really written very "cleanly". These are not easy subjects to read/write, but for this time, it was very well treated, and I was "happy" with that !!
In short, I expected the worst, and it was really a great discovery, I will read the rest with great pleasure !

I admit this book didn't really ping my interest for a long time. Vampires are so over-done, especially in teen fiction, that the idea of diving into another series about them just wasn't that appealing. But then the entire series was on sale on Kindle so I figured what the heck, I'll give it a shot. And I come away from the first book feeling pleasantly surprised.
First let's talk about the characters. Rose is not a bland protagonist that any average reader can sneak themselves into. She is fully realized with her own personality and flaws. In fact, most of the characters given any type of development exhibit flaws that I found very refreshing. You honestly get tired of reading about how perfect so-and-so is. Which isn't to say that isn't in this book as well, but we'll get to that later.
I also appreciated many of the sensitive subjects the book touched upon. Without giving the plot away, I'll say that the ones Lissa struggled with handled particularly well and I applaud the author for that. The politics and atmosphere of high school were also portrayed very believably. One could almost believe they were in a typical school, vampire subject matter aside.
And then there was the romance. I can understand it being appealing on some level because of its forbidden aspect, but I can't say I was exactly rooting for it, either. It could be that I'm older than the intended audience, but I personally hope that things between them stay as they were at the end of this book. And him being described as a "god" did have me groan and roll my eyes quite a few times.
The negatives of this book aside, I found it very good. It took a while for the plot to pick up but once it did I was glued to my Kindle and anxious to find out what happened next. I'm already looking forward to diving into the next book in the series.

Quick and fun. Exactly what I was looking for on a rainy day. I'm interested to see what else happens in their senior year.
