One of my favorites
I honestly can't even express how much I loved this book. Honestly at first I didn't think I would like it. But I actually loved it! It went the perfect pace! And just when I thought it was over, more things occurred that just shocked me. 5 out of 5 stars. Absolute perfection. I don't know why I took so long to read it.
4.5 STARS!!
I thought I wouldn't like it because I've read so many YA books based on vampires, but boy was I wrong!!!!
I LOVED IT!! I love all the characters. I love the world building. I love the plot. I love the relationships. I LOVE EVERYTHING! I can't believe that I bought a box set of the first three books 5 years ago and I'm just now reading it!!! I'm moving right on to the next book :D
Have a great day, and keep on reading!!

Synopsis
Rose swore to protect her best friend Lissa when they fled what threatened her at St. Vladimir’s Academy, a boarding school for vampires and their half-human bodyguards, Dhamphirs. When they’re finally caught and dragged back to the campus, keeping Lissa safe becomes even more dangerous. They’re pulled back into the royal politics of the Moroi as well as the lesser dramas of high school life. But danger lurks as someone tries to reveal Lissa’s secrets and possibly even kill her. And of course, the Strigoi, undead who feed on Moroi for strength, are always a looming threat.
Thoughts
I’m way late to the party on this book. It’s been on my to-read list for forever, but I just kept bypassing it. The title and original cover didn’t really appeal to me. Vampire Academy? Eh, the title made me judge prematurely. The trailer for the movie piqued my interest and I might have bumped it up to the top of my to-read pile. I regret nothing. This book has a completely different take on vampire lore that is refreshing and intriguing. There’s a great friendship between Rose and Lissa that doesn’t get diminished by the romantic interests (which are also great). Rose is sarcastic and confident and willing to do anything for Lissa, but she also has a vulnerable side. This book has it all; romance, action, mystery, high school gossip, and it even grapples with mental health issues. I need to get my hands on book two, stat!

In similar fashion to my last review, this read fell a little flat.
I feel after I'd finished reading Empire of the Vampire, I was introduced to a whole new love of vampires, that VA didn't quite cut. I will be reading the next book in the series, in the hopes it picks it up again as I believe they do get better.
Overall, I did enjoy the writing style, the characters and the lore, which I do want to explore more of.

Okay, so I didn't know anything about this series upon reading this book. I knew it was about vampires and I assumed from the title it was about a vampire school, but I didn't know anything else.
So, I began reading and at first we like, um what?
This book was not at all what I expected. In the beginning I was annoyed that the story protagonist was basically a sidekick/body guard. She goes by Rose and is a Dhampir (Half human/half Moroi vampire) for her best friend, Lissa, who is a vampire princess. The school they go to a special academy where they train to be the best of either Dhampir or Moroi.
These two "races" are brought together out of necessity. Dhampir cannot mate with each other or humans. Their race only survives by breeding with the Moroi. In turn, they protect the Moroi from Strigoi. Strigoi are Moroi who take the life of a someone by feeding on them. Strigoi want to kill the Moroi. So, Dhampirs keep the Moroi alive and train to do so at the academy.
Throughout the story, we find out that Rose and Lissa survived a car wreck together and around that time, a deep bond formed between them. Rose is able to hear Lissa's thoughts and occasionally she "goes into her brain" and can hear and see what Lissa is doing.
This book is told in both present and flashbacks to two years before, which explains more about their bond and why they originally left the academy together.
I enjoyed the book. I found it weird at first, but I came to enjoy Rose overtime, even though I don't love that she's the bodyguard. She's a strong character and I wait to see what happens next in this series!
