I liked it. Yes, there were some similarities between this book and JLA's Half-Blood but I feel like the latter was more exciting. I found myself bored with this book. Yes, the beginning was good but after the Moroi, Dhampir whatnots were explained I kinda guessed the flow of the story.
I like the fact that Rose and Lissa share a close bond. How Rose can see and feel Lissa's thoughts and experiences. I also liked the whole powers thing. But royalty concept mixed with death, gossip, romance and mystery didn't really pique my interest. I got annoyed at how unfairly Rose was treated and the idea that the Moroi are a useless vampire breed. Character wise, Rose's kickass personality was admirable; and Lissa' sweet and manipulative persona didn't make me hate her so that's good news.
I wasn't very surprised when Viktor turned out to be a bad guy (although I love the name). And Dmitri was the predictable tough but sweet love interest but I liked Christian more. It was okay, overall. The twists were good and the ending was expected. I think I'll read the next installment.

Pretty standard magic school + vampire tropes. Not the most compelling story but hopefully gets better from here. I wish I read it when I was younger as I think teen me would have loved it.
During probably the first third of this book though, I didn't really care for Rose at all as a main character. But, if you find yourself feeling that too, don't give up on the book, just keep reading. By the end when we start to understand why a dhampir, like Rose, devotes their life to protecting a moroi, and I started to like and understand Rose more and more.
Before I starting reading this I got some advice from a friend of mine and that was to make sure while you read the book to realize that it is part of a six book series. This was very important for me to keep in the back of my head because as a stand along book this would be quite bad, without a huge conflict or resolving action scenes. I think as the series goes on I will start to realize that although this book wasn't the most action packed or suspenseful, that it was really necessary to build up these characters and the vampire world they live in.
With that being said, Richelle Mead did a great job in creating these characters and leaving me attached to them so much that I cannot wait to pick up the next.

This is still one of my favorite middle school nostalgic books. It's witty and fun, and the characters are always great to be around. Never a dull moment!
Reread this book for the fourth time and it’s just as good as I remember it to be. Action-packed with mysteries and high school drama mixed with forbidden romances. I love it.
The world created in this novel was really well done. It was a little bit slower paced at the beginning as far as world building but it balanced well with the action of the characters. The character development was well done and you could very easily see growth in the two main characters, Lissa and Rose. There were some twists I did not see coming at all but I really enjoyed them. This wasn't the same type of vampire lore as in many other books and TV shows that are very prevalent so it was good to read them. I did find it a little tough to get into now that I'm finished book 1, I will head straight into book 2.

My fave series ever
Was this the strongest book I've ever read? Not even close. Its verg weak in the world building. I was left with many questions. It had predictable relationships and plots. However, was it entertaining? Very much. I do want to read the whole series eventually. Maybe the future books will solidify the mythology better for me.
