It’s a product of its time. The casual racism, sexism, classism and xenophobia is scattered throughout and occasionally startling but also interesting as an insight into the mindset of the people in the time and place it was written. None of this is to say that any of these attitudes are acceptable, just to give context to the warnings for people who are considering reading it.

There is also a lot of something I don’t know how to label - a blend of phrenology, classism, racism and pretty privilege. After a while you can tell if a character is going to turn out to be a goody or a baddie from the first description of them. It reminds me of early anthropology.

I’m not sure if the stories got better over the course of the book, or maybe I just got settled in with the style. It’s partially formulaic, but it has a wide array of mysteries and crimes and different enough plots in each that it didn’t become the same thing again and again. Also at points it became kind of horror themed? A man got locked in a hydraulic press that was going to crush him in one story, had me on the edge of my seat. If you stop and read slowly, playing the scenes in your head, you can really get a taste of the characters, and I find Holmes to be delightful to read about.

I think that Sherlock Holmes' adventures are much better suited in the short story format, but I am glad that there were the two novels to establish the characters first (though there was some changes as the characters developed). I would have liked to have more stories where Sherlock and Watson are roommates, rather than having Watson immediately marry Mary. There were a few like this, but I wish there were more. My favorite of the collection was the one I had already read beforehand: The Speckled Band.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is one of my top 5 favorite books. Throughout the entire book all the stories are entertaining. I do not think I have been bored once by this book. The book is almost perfectly written with all the short stories in it. I would definitely recommend this book.

Whereas I was pleasantly surprised by volume 1, the stories of volume 2 were a mild letdown.

Less… complete? Cohesive? Certainly, Silver Blaze ended prematurely, if only by a scene or two. 

I was somewhat surprised also by the time jump. I don’t know if I’m correct, but it seemed these were amongst the later tales.
