“a pity for that colorless existence which never uplifted its possessor beyond the region of that blind contentment, in which no moment of anguish ever visited her soul, in which she would never have the taste of life’s delirium”
feeling grateful for the strong wings of all the women before me. i can only hope to fly twice as high as they did

“A certain light was beginning to dawn dimly within her — the light, which, showing the way, forbids it.”
Pretty good turn of the century novel about female infidelity, and also one of the first to do it. Messed up that writing a book this revealing meant you got basically shutout from publishing a novel ever again, making this Chopin’s last. Definitely have to adjust your dial to meet it as a product of its time, just to realize that lines like “you may consider expressing myself is unwomanly, but I don’t care” for the radical notion that it was for that period. As for its thoughts on unrequited love and longing, that’s a tale almost as old as time. Case in point: there’s a scene in here where the main character reads a letter from her crush that *doesn’t even mention her* while she listens to their favorite song on piano. It’s incredibly effective, and the elements could also be swapped out for swiping thru your crush’s Insta while listening to Bon Iver.

Gosh I can’t believe I hated this book so much in high school. I have had an awakening since then and this go-round I loved it. Maybe the first time ever I have finished a book and immediately wanted to start it over from the beginning
Umi got this for me for my bday, clearly she hates me and doesn't want me to be happy.
