holy shit. this was extremely powerful. I think my favourite section was the poem about the woman asking for her stuff back. damn. I think I need to read this again or find a version of the play performed to watch because of course hearing the words and seeing the performance and dancing would add so much, but the words alone are still so moving and beautiful and strong and heart wrenching and alive.
Hard time deciding between 4 and 5 stars. A truly powerful read.
I'm usually not one for poetry, but this read more like a story. It was a little dark, the language was a little difficult to not to nit-pick, but overall, it seemed like poetry for every young woman. Maybe I'll write a full review later.
It's hard to give a star rating to this book for me, because it's clearly not written for me (it's kind of in the title). I appreciate what the book says (for the most part; there are a few problematic issues here and there) and I really enjoy how the book says it, but I just didn't vibe with it. I would recommend it as a read though. It's well worth reading and I am glad to have read it. It's quite short, you can crank it out in half an hour or so.

Great insight to what women experienced and souls sometimes did not speak. Every woman can relate in some aspect to any of the women presented.
I actually played the Lady in Purple in college.

Written in dialect with the play directions; would be better to hear recited live with the "rainbow" cast. Spoken word loses it's power, naturally, when it's typed. The impact of words, space and time can only be expressed in writing via capital letters, but doesn't get the passion across.
