DNF. I think I've realized that reading written plays are not for me. I love the visual arts, but the written form is just too difficult for me to understand.

I would love to see for colored girls live. This collection of poetry is a glimpse into the soul of a black woman. A black woman who yearns to be loved, who celebrates and cherishes friendships, who is human. That's what I enjoyed most about for colored girls- it's not so much poems that reinforce negative perceptions of black women, but acknowledge her as worthy just because. Her experiences with love are varied, mostly traumatic. Her experience with racism early is heartbreaking. But she still moves forward, she lives.
Poetry is not a genre I read that often. I think I'm too lazy to think about the symbolism. These poems I think I'll have to revisit again to continue seeking understanding of individual poems & how they relate. I thought of each poem as a separate entity, a story that needs to be told. Reflecting on what I've read, I suppose it's meant to be a collective experience of what we call love.

Definitely not what I expected and not something I enjoyed. I gave it 3 stars because I should have done more research before picking it up. This isn't the type of book I would ever like so I don't feel it's right to judge it as such.

I’m not sure how I’d like seeing this on stage (definitely has that college liberal theatre group feel) but the poems themselves are beautiful.

Amazing poem/play/novel. Every woman should read it.

4-4.5 at times: I liked this book/choreopoem well enough up until halfway through, but being most definitely not the right type of woc for it, I didn't connect with the first half or so as much as I could have. It's also a little hard to visualize the choreography aspect of it, and I wish I could also get the chance to see it live as that may have helped with a more immediate appreciation for the text.

That said, around the halfway or 3/4 point, something changed for me. I don't know if it was just I actually adjusted to the style and visualization of the dancing, or if there was a marked shift in the tone, but I love love love the latter portion of this. The level of emotional involvement I was looking for was definitely hit, and I think some of the last lines in this are going to (positively) haunt me for life.
