I saw a staged reading of this today and I was close to crying the entire time. Beautiful, touching, and raw poetry that all women can relate to. Stories of love, lust, abuse, violence, and sisterhood are told through monologues in poem form. A gorgeous piece. See it performed if you can, read it if you cannot.
Wow. What I wouldn’t give to see the original production live.
As a dancer myself, I could see the movement in the words of each poem. Each poem was so powerful, universal and yet specific; introduction helped to give the whole choreopoem context in time and space.
That being said, I wish the titles of the poems were written in the book somewhere because I think they could add additional meaning, but I’m not sure how that would be done in a way that didn’t disrupt the flow of the entire piece.

simply stunning. heartbreaking, hopeful and very real. the everyday experiences of a black girl summarised and detailed so so beautifully and honestly made me feel so emotional by the way in which each poem would hit so close to me. i am so grateful to ntozake. i’ll revisit this once in a while. may she rest in power

All I have to say can be summed up eloquently by this reviewer: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/149162066?book_show_action=true&page=1
While I typically don't like when an author uses abbreviated/texting spellings of words (u for you, etc.) I feel that all of the incorrect spellings are consistent and serve the dialect of the piece. I'm okay with them because they feel intentional and meaningful in relating the voices of the women in the play as informal, direct, and unedited. This play is raw and important. The view into the lives and pain of these women and the agency they reclaim through their truth-telling and ownership of their stories is beautiful and powerful.

Powerful, heartbreaking, painful, and lovely, this should be required reading for those interested in American poetry or theater.
