This is a book every black girl should read, sort of like a right of passage for all black girls. This books is so powerful. Would recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading this book.

I remember reading this in high school and watching an amazing tape of it being performed (a television special, maybe, I don't quite recall). As a teenager I loved narrative poetry; I've since moved away from seeking out that genre--often these days I downright avoid it--but this book will always stick with me. I keep coming back to read it again and again.
