Het grove taalgebruik, de hilarische gebeurtenissen en het tokkie bestaan maakt het boek leuk om te lezen. Mooie verhalen van de familie Verhulst en laat zien hoe een familie het zonder geld, maar met steun voor elkaar het goed kan overleven.

I found this book frustrating and gloomy and didn't want to turn the page to see what was going to happen next. Maybe that was a sign that it was good and realistic, but I did not enjoy reading it.

Plastisch en poëtisch geschreven. De helaasheid der dingen is donker, cynisch en beschrijft heel wat schokkende, hartbrekende scènes maar is tegelijkertijd hartverwarmend, scherpzinnig en grappig. Je begint als afkeurende buitenstaander te lezen maar voelt je algauw deel van dit gezin aan de rand van de samenleving. Die ondanks vele foute beslissingen en drankmisbruik, een bijna onbreekbare familie zijn.
