Not going to lie. I picked Chilling Effect up because of the epic cover and, well, SPACE CATS!! How could I pass on that?!

I wanted to give this book a fair chance, but I just couldn't make it through. I went into it totally set for some silly sci-fi fun based off the glowing recommendation and charming summary I read. But instead, I found the lead annoying, her oh so zany antics and hijinks tiring--not funny, and her love interest far too flat and boring. There were a lot of attempts at humor in this book, but they rarely landed for me. In particular, the abundant Mass Effect references the author couldn't help but keep making really started to grate on me before I even reached the halfway point.
And then it hit me that Vakar was just Garrus... this is just shakarian fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off! And I think that was the beginning of the end for my will to make it all the way through.
Sorry, but Captain Eva is no Commander Shepard.

Fun space opera, but I thought the plot could’ve been a bit better! Lovely characters though
3.5 stars
Enjoyable but a little scattered. I really liked seeing how the different sentient species - and people from various planets and stations - acted in response to our MC's antics. Some things got really repetitive, some things felt like they came out of nowhere (to the point where this almost felt like two books instead of one, but the second book was 1/4 the size of the first one?)
I will definitely still read book two, because I'm curious to see where it goes from here, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a new favorite
