Never thought I’d live to see the day where a toxic female friendship is healed by the power of live theater but I live For it.

Great graphic novel about a trans teen starting over in California and learning the ins and outs of being a woman with some overly helpful friends. Phoebe learns how to make waves on her own terms.

This was a really unique read! I loved seeing a young trans character experience so much of life in one story! The female characters were very complex and interesting, the male characters were generally unkind and at times violent physically and emotionally. The story was very chaotic but this is how teenage hood feels, not sure I would recommend to a teenager.

I make it a point to try and read as many queer comics as I can. I understand that sometimes, they’re going to have elements of queer people being treated poorly.
This felt like… something worse. Like the whole thing just existed to be an exercise in Phoebe jumping from abuse to abuse. I couldn’t root for anyone, because it was like triaging who was maybe going to be the least-toxic, and it was a race to the bottom.

All for the emotional burden to then be placed on Phoebe to pull Mackenzie out of her own head as the REAL main character of the book? Phoebe spends the whole book feeling like someone else’s doll, but in the end, it felt like her entire character was just a doll used to push the story forward for those around her.
