This was an interesting one. I was excited because there seemed to be a lot of great reviews of this book, and not to say it wasn’t a well written book but it didn’t captivate me as much as I hoped. Honestly the last 15% of the book was when it really was interesting and fast paced. The buildup was 85% of the book and that was much too long for me.

Basically the book is about an author who takes a plot of a book written by one of his late students (not the book itself just the basic plot points) and passes it off as his own work which comes back to bite him when he starts getting anonymous messages threatening to expose him. Sounds interesting right? Well it takes more than 50% of the book for the majority of those things to even begin happening and for much of that buildup I was asking myself “so that’s it?” Yeah he took some plot points from someone else but he wrote an entire original novel with it so I don’t get why it’s a big deal if people found that out. To be fair, the end of the book was when it got interesting and was much harder for me to put down, and there is no denying that it is a very well written book. It just was a little too slow of a burn and a little too involved with what authors’ process and careers look like. I was also able to predict the ending plot twist once the action began to pick up.

The last point I’ll make: This was advertised as a sort of book within a book as “the plot” that was stolen needed to be shown to us readers. This was intriguing to me and normally I love that kind of set up but unfortunately I would hardly call this a book within a book.. maybe a short story within a book. It might have been easier for the plot that was taken to just be explained rather than half way written in

I enjoyed this novel. It was a predictable but i still enjoyed the ride. It definitely isn't a who dunnit type novel because I am sure most people figured out half way through this novel as I did who the villian was but it was fun watching it unfold.

4 stars.

This was an excellent read. It was so compelling, and the writing style is inoffensive. I needed to find out what would happen next. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.

I really did enjoy this book overall. I do think the first 2/3rds are very slow. This book could have been a bit shorter, which is something I almost never say. There is not much happening for the most of the book. HOWEVER, when the plot starts to pick up in that last 30%, boy does it pick up. There was twist after twist towards the end. I did see some of the twists coming, but I still think they were amazing twists, and the ending is where it really knocked it out of the park for me. I didn't see that one coming at all. I have only been reading mystery/thriller books for about a year, but I haven't seen an ending quite like that one, or a plot.

Please read this book as soon as you can!
