There's a good reason why this novel shouldn't be considered a romance. This is a Gothic novel at its best. The story is quite slow-paced, but the character development, the tension building, the atmosphere, and the eventual unraveling made this a very enjoyable read. Daphne du Maurier was brilliant in making sure that the ghost of Rebecca was felt all throughout the story, always seeming to haunt the halls of Manderley to the point that you may think she's alive instead of dead, so much so that it feels claustrophobic at times.
And the way she wrote Mrs. Danvers? That woman gave me chills. Truly the best subtle villain ever. There are a few twists here and there, and it will keep you guessing where the story's going to go. If you're in the mood for a classic Gothic novel that's easy to get through, this book is for you.
